Did you ever experience “firehose training?” That’s when learners are flooded with content, without regard for how they perceive, process and retain it. Information overload is a significant hindrance to effective learning and retention. But, can we do anything about it? Fortunately, we can. Over the decades, cognitive load theory has been researched and refined. We now know there are ways to reduce high cognitive load. Please join UCI Division of Continuing Education in welcoming Connie Malamed (a.k.a. The eLearning Coach) to explore a model of how we learn, what high cognitive load really means, and instructional strategies you can use to reduce high cognitive load. Join us if you are looking for ways to design more effective learning experiences. This webinar will include pre-registration advisement for individuals interested in UCI DCE’s fully online E-Learning Instructional Design Certificate Program.

Please join UCI Division of Continuing Education in welcoming Camille Funk, Director of UCI DCE DesignPlus, and Laura Silva, Associate Vice President of Learning Design and Engagement for Los Angeles Pacific University, as they tackle these questions and learn more about how course media fills the learning gaps that tend to limit the effectiveness of more traditional lectures. 00560 Tips for Advising Couples Filing for Social Security
Tuesday, May 28, 2019
12:00PM - 1:00PM
ucidce.zoom.us

Couples who file for Social Security benefits without taking spousal and survivor benefits into consideration increase their risk of running out of sufficient assets in retirement. I will discuss claiming rules for couples, including both Spousal and Survivor benefits, and will show how long that it will take to recover foregone benefits due to delays. I will then compare those break-even periods with the median expected mortality for men and for women at 65. Because Social Security benefits are analogous to an annuity, I will follow up with a demonstration on how delaying benefits can allow for increased portfolio risk, improving the odds of having sufficient assets. I will finish with a discussion on strategies that couples and planners might want to consider that will allow them to delay claiming for as long as possible.

Speaker: Mark Edwards has over 30 years of investment management experience. He spent 11 years at the Minnesota State Board of Investment where he managed internal equities and oversaw the trading desk. He spent the next 20 years as a Managing Partner at the Plexus Group, where he consulted with mutual funds, money managers, brokers and pension funds on process management, quantitative management, and trading. He has written numerous articles for both the Journal of Portfolio Management and for the Financial Analyst Journal.

00678 This Island Isn't So Lonely: The Art of Working with Clients Remotely
Wednesday, June 5, 2019
11:00AM - 12:00PM
ucidce.zoom.us

No longer limited by local, regional, or state markets to draw new clients, independent educational consultants (IECs) are learning new ways to communicate with families remotely. Without the luxury of in-office, face-to-face appointments, how can IECs effectively communicate their value to prospective clients? Without in-person meetings, how can an IEC build relationships with their client families and ensure student work is completed on time? These and other challenges are what keep many IECs with large remote populations of students up at night. Join UCI Division of Continuing Education in welcoming instructor and Certified Educational Planner, Kristina Dooley, as she discusses how she and her team of IECs at Estrela Consulting successfully navigate the college search and application process with families from around the U.S. and the world using technological tools and defined processes. Kristina will share tips to aid IECs in navigating remote client relationships and provide strategies for keeping students on track from afar. This webinar will include pre-registration advisement for individuals interested in UCI DCE’s fully online Independent Educational Consultant Certificate Program.
