Offered in collaboration with the National BSL-3 Training Program from UC Irvine's School of Medicine.

The Introduction to Biosafety as a Career Specialized Studies is a comprehensive program designed to ensure safe laboratory practices, minimize risks associated with biological hazards, and promote compliance with biosafety regulations. The program emphasizes the critical role of biosafety professionals in safeguarding both public health and environmental integrity within research, diagnostic, clinical and production facilities handling biological agents.

By prioritizing education, proactive risk management, and regulatory compliance, this program aims to engage and prepare individuals for the responsibilities associated with the oversight of facilities working with biological materials.

This program is ideal for researchers, laboratorians, or senior undergraduate students in the life sciences or public health who are considering a career change or are interested in learning more about the field of biosafety.

Eligibility and Requirements

Apply to become a candidate for the program: A Declaration of Candidacy is required to establish candidacy in this program. Complete the application and pay the application and candidacy fee of $125 (non-refundable). Learn more about the benefits of becoming a candidate

A candidate in the program is awarded a specialized studies certificate upon the successful completion of two (2) required courses totaling 6 units, each with a letter grade of “B” or better. All requirements must be completed within five (5) years after the student enrolls in their first course. To receive the Certified Digital Certificate after completing all the program requirements, students must submit the Request for Certificate to initiate the certificate audit process. Students not pursuing the certificate are welcome to take as many individual courses as they wish.
