Learning Across Borders: Global Opportunities Start Here
UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education (DCE) helps international learners build the skills and confidence to thrive wherever life takes them.
When Cecilia Castro de Andrade left Brazil to open the first U.S. Havaianas flagship store, she chose a prime spot near the Huntington Beach Pier—a cozy storefront where the Brazilian flip-flops brand could tap into Southern California's beach culture.
But to grow her business, she needed more than a good location. She needed to understand how Americans do business. So, Cecilia enrolled in UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education's Accelerated Certificate Programs (ACPs) in Business Administration and International Business Operations and Management. Her studies led to an internship that gave her practical U.S. work experience and the confidence to scale her operations.
"Southern California was always my favorite place in the world," Cecilia said. "I cannot imagine living here and being successful in any kind of work if I hadn't attended UCI. They taught me everything about the way Americans do business, and believe me, it's different than in Brazil. It was essential."
From Engineering to Finance: Building a New Career Path
Eduardo Motta came to DCE with a similar goal. "I'm a former engineer from Brazil and I figured out that I had to update my skills," he said. "I chose the UCI International Finance and Project Management ACP because it's a perfect fit for me. UCI is one of the best universities in the U.S., and I like living in California. You have the opportunity to study, work an internship, and get a work permit for one year."
Beyond learning the latest technology and American business practices, Eduardo valued the cultural exchange. "I think the most important aspect was being in touch with so many different cultures."
Minh Thao Chan traveled from France to take the ACP in International Finance, with his sights set on gaining work experience in Southern California's tech scene. He quickly landed a full-time management role at a global engineering company in Silicon Beach thanks to the program's industry-experienced instructors, relevant curriculum, and his internship experience.
"I chose UCI because it's close to Silicon Beach, one of the fastest-growing hubs for technology," Minh said. "The teachers not only have the technical background—they also have industry experience. They know what's happening in the industry right now." His internship and OPT year allowed him to stay in the U.S. after completing his program, opening the door to exactly the career he'd envisioned.
How DCE's ACPs Work
Accelerated Certificate Programs or ACPs move quickly and are completed in about three months. Courses are taught by expert instructors who work in the fields they teach, covering topics like Data Science, International Finance, Digital Marketing and Communications, and Business Administration.
From early on, you'll collaborate with an academic advisor who helps you plan your courses, clarify your career goals, and navigate any challenges. You'll also have access to career workshops, interview preparation, and internship opportunities with Orange County organizations, which provide hands-on experiences that translate directly into job readiness.
Outside the classroom, DCE provides immigration advising, health and wellness resources, and social activities that help you explore California and beyond and build community. Many program alumni also choose to pursue Optional Practical Training (OPT), which allows for up to one year of paid work experience in the U.S.
Building Careers That Cross Borders
From Huntington Beach storefronts to Silicon Beach tech companies, DCE’s alumni gain more than credentials. They build practical skills, real-world experience, and the confidence to pursue opportunities wherever their careers take them.
