Ethics Workshop
This course is designed as a research seminar on ethics for students from various disciplines, including Social Sciences, Humanities, Social Ecology, Biological Sciences, and occasionally Computer Science. Most of the students, however, come from Political and Social Science since this seminar is listed as a course through the Political Science Department. Students are invited to join the workshop if they have an interest in ethics that they wish to pursue using scientific tools and scientific analysis, broadly conceptualized.
Modeled after the Workshops in the Economics Department at the U of Chicago and the Oxford tutorials, the seminar allows students to work on a piece of independent research and share their work in progress with fellow students throughout the term, presenting the final paper at the end of the quarter. To expose students to the research process itself, we ask faculty members to discuss their work in progress, not just the finished products.
People can raise questions and ask for input. They can share difficult parts of the research or writing project, discuss the writing process, find new research approaches and venues, and inform students about the publication process itself. We strive to maintain a friendly and low-key atmosphere while emphasizing the process of producing high-quality research.
Student topics may be qualifying papers, dissertations, conference papers, or work with a faculty member. Part of the goal is to learn how to give and accept criticism, write a professional paper, and navigate the publication process. The format is a mix of discussion and presentation of original research.
Although we are flexible, the usual format means that from 2-3, we will discuss individual student projects; from 3-4 and from 4 to 4:50, we will hear work presentations by students, UC Irvine faculty, or visitors.
