Instructor Spotlight: David Mashian, Real Estate Licensure

David Mashian

Why did you decide to become an instructor with DCE?

I thought it would be fun to instruct students, and UCI DCE was just starting their Real Estate certificate program. I was the first instructor and I helped develop the curriculum. I love interacting with people and helping the students entering the field to accomplish what they want.

I thought that by becoming an instructor, I could pay it forward for future generations. I am a third-generation real estate agent. My father and grandfather were real estate developers — so it is in my blood. Also, real estate allows me to grow both personally and financially.

What’s your favorite lesson to teach and why?

I love real estate. So, any subject in the field is great. Real Estate Principles and Real Estate Practice are the subjects I like the most. The Real Estate Practice course covers sales training and is the most practical class for students since it shows them how to become a successful broker in the industry.

I like this course the most since it touches on all aspects of real estate. Interacting with students to see how they gain an understanding and appreciation for real estate when they complete the course is extremely fulfilling.

What’s unique about your teaching style?

What makes my teaching style unique is that I like to engage with my students. I get them involved and energized. That’s easy since I am extremely excited about the subject. I often ask questions to students to keep them on their toes. Similarly, I welcome questions anytime during my presentations. Oftentimes, the questions bring a new perspective to the subject, and I love it when that happens.

What do you find most rewarding about being an instructor?

I am constantly learning. I go to workshops and conferences, read up and watch videos on subjects that interest me. As an extension, I also love teaching. It gives me great satisfaction to see that all the work I have done in improving myself can go to help others.

It’s very fulfilling to see the “WOW!” or “Ah Ha!” moment, to learn and see something new, or in an entirely unique perspective. I see how just a bit of interaction with students helps propel them into new vistas. I love the feeling of seeing people grow.

What advice would you give to anyone interested in pursuing a career in Real Estate?

Real estate is a vast field and rewarding intellectually, socially, and financially. I know several people who have retired and are starting to invest in real estate part-time. So, the financial rewards are significant. The field employs high-quality people who have skills, knowledge, and integrity. This provides opportunities to enrich one’s life.
