Introduction to Fiber Optics

An elective course in the Optical Engineering and Optical Instrument Design Certificate Programs.

This course will introduce basic properties of optical fibers, characteristics and control of light propagating inside optic fibers, different types of optical fiber, transmission of information via optical fibers, and fiber-optic transmission networks. Learn the working knowledge of fiber optics and photonics, measurement and testing, and their applications in modern optical systems. Topics emphasize optical fiber basic principles, devices, system analysis and design, including light modulation methods, light coupling to fiber, fiber waveguide dispersion, attenuation and scattering phenomena. Other components used with optic fibers technology such as connectors, couplers, splitters, amplifiers, photo detectors, LED and laser light sources used for optical fiber communications will also be briefly introduced.
