Inside UC Irvine’s Independent Educational Consultant (IEC) Program

Steven Antonoff on Building a Career in College Consulting

With overly stressed students facing an increasingly competitive college admission landscape, the need for Independent Educational Consultants (IECs) to initiate and coordinate the process is growing rapidly.

After all, families have little time to find the right scholastic fit, research financing options, and complete the arduous admissions process. That’s where IEC professionals come in, offering expertise and knowledge to make it all come together and give students a headstart on an outstanding college experience.

“The demand for independent educational consultants continues to grow, and I believe that trend will only accelerate,” said Steven R. Antonoff, Advisory Board member and former instructor for UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education’s unique and prestigious Independent Educational Consultant certificate program.

“Over the past two decades, families have come to understand something important: the cost of a college education is one of the largest financial commitments most families will ever make. Investing in expert guidance during the planning process is not an extravagance; it is simply good sense.”

A certificate from UC Irvine’s IEC program can lead directly to a career in this rewarding field. It provides a strong base of knowledge and the skillsets required for finding the academic environment that best meets the needs of a wide range of clients. Students also learn from leading industry experts how to launch, market, and grow a successful IEC business practice.

“Our program is built entirely around the needs, the questions, and the professional aspirations of people who want to practice as independent consultants,” Antonoff said.

A highly accomplished Independent Educational Consultant, Steven was the IEC program’s first instructor and played a major role in shaping the curriculum as well as its pool of expert instructors. He’s also author of several authoritative books on the subject including College Match, The College Finder and A Student of Colleges, which is used in several of the IEC program’s classes.

Steven was kind enough to share his thoughts on the IEC certificate program and his own professional journey.

Let’s start with some of your background and experience.

I have been practicing as an Independent Educational Consultant in Denver since 1981. It’s hard to imagine more than four decades of work I love deeply. Before becoming an IEC, I held several positions at the University of Denver as Dean of Admissions and Financial Aid, Executive Director of Admissions and Student Affairs, and Dean of Students.

That background in higher education gave me an understanding of admissions and how colleges evaluate students. But that experience didn’t teach me about the flavor, the culture, or the ambiance of colleges. That’s what I learned as an IEC.

Please tell us about your experience with the UC Irvine IEC certificate program — as an instructor as well as an advisory board member.

That experience was formative, not only for the learners who went through it, but for me as well. Working to shape a curriculum from the ground up, asking what new IECs truly need to know and how best to help them develop professional confidence, reinforced everything I believe about this field. I also chaired the five-year review of the program.

As an advisory board member, I continue to think about how we can keep the curriculum current, attract the finest instructors, and serve learners who are genuinely serious about building meaningful practices. Watching the program grow into one of the most respected credentials in our profession has been one of the great professional satisfactions of my career.

Give us some insight on the program. How does it prepare students for success in this field?

The UC Irvine program is genuinely unique, and I do not use that word lightly. No other UC, or other university, offers a certificate program designed specifically and exclusively for Independent Educational Consultants.

That unified purpose shapes everything: the curriculum, the discussions, and the community that forms among learners. We also take enormous care in selecting our instructors who are among the most knowledgeable people in the field. They’re accessible, generous with their time, and genuinely invested in the success of those they teach.

What intangibles do learners take away from the IEC certificate program?

The value of a skilled IEC goes well beyond facts and figures. IECs are “students of colleges” in the truest sense. We do not just provide information about institutions; we provide wisdom and judgment. That’s the very distinct, and very significant, advantage we have over AI. We help young people grow up.

We help them learn to make better decisions, to become more discerning consumers, and to understand themselves more deeply. In an era when the college search process has become increasingly complex and anxiety-producing for families, the IEC’s role as a knowledgeable, calm, student-centered guide has never been more important.

How would you characterize the popularity of the program?

Ours is a program with a strong and well-earned reputation. The world of higher education is broad, however, and there is no shortage of resources and credentials available to people exploring this field. That means we must remain active and intentional about communicating what makes the UC Irvine program distinctively valuable.

What sets us apart is our singular focus on IEC practice, the extraordinary quality of our instructors, the seriousness and caliber of our learners, and the community that forms among people who share a common professional purpose. We should never take that reputation for granted. Indeed, we must continue to earn it by delivering on the promise the program makes to every learner who enrolls.

Do you have any learner success stories to share?

I have lost count of how many times a leader in our profession has come up to me at a conference to say that their UC Irvine certificate was one of the most important factors in their success, not just professionally, but in their love of the work. Sometimes it was a piece of wisdom from an instructor. Sometimes it was a connection made with a fellow learner that grew into a lifelong friendship.

Our goal is straightforward: we want every learner who completes the program to leave prepared, informed, and genuinely confident in their ability to build a successful, ethical, student-centered practice.

Any closing thoughts?

This is a wonderful time to be entering the field. Opportunities abound. But the foundation matters enormously. The road to a successful IEC practice runs through a genuine understanding of the profession's practices, principles, and ethics.

And the best place to build that foundation is the IEC certificate program at UC Irvine. It is the most structured, the most purposeful, the most professionally oriented program available. It may not be the shortest path or the least expensive one. But it is the right one. And it will be one of the best investments you make in your professional life.
