Rising Above Office Politics

Rise above office politics.

Difficult workplace dynamics can pose career challenges when not properly managed. Here's how you can stay out of the crossfire.

Getting established at a new job is challenging enough for young professionals without also having to navigate tricky workplace dynamics. While every office has its own culture, personalities, and unwritten rules, it’s common to encounter situations where agendas clash and relationships become strained.

A LinkedIn poll revealed that 76% of professionals have experienced “difficult or damaging office politics” at half or more of the companies they’ve worked for. As Max Messmer, Chairman and CEO of Robert Half International, put it: “It’s wise to be aware of political undercurrents on the job because they do exist in most organizations. There are people who seek to get ahead in their careers at the expense of others, and this behavior erodes trust and undermines team morale.”

You can’t change every personality in the workplace, but you can stay aware of organizational dynamics and find your own path that allows you to thrive without getting caught up in unnecessary conflict. Think of it as advocating for yourself while also supporting your coworkers or advancing your career while contributing to a healthier work environment.

Here are a few timeless approaches to rise above office politics:

  • Lead with Authenticity
Building authentic relationships with colleagues is key to building trust. Be open and honest, communicate clearly, and follow through on your commitments. Share glimpses of your life, like weekend plans or hobbies, so coworkers feel they know the real you, and show genuine curiosity about their goals and experiences. If you’re new to the job, invite someone for coffee or a virtual lunch to break the ice. Above all, be yourself. Authenticity not only helps you build bonds, but it also fosters collaboration and keeps you away from negative dynamics.
  • Stay Neutral When Possible
Workplace gossip and conflict can be hard to avoid, but neutrality is a powerful stance. If conversations veer into rumors or complaints, listen without joining in or taking sides. If someone tries to pull you into a conflict, empathize without becoming an advocate for their cause. Sometimes, keeping your work life healthy means setting boundaries.
  • Champion Teamwork Over Self-Promotion
It’s natural to want your accomplishments recognized, but positioning yourself as a team player goes further. Celebrate both your team’s successes and wins across the organization. Make yourself available to help others and seek their input on decisions. These actions foster cohesion, transparency, and respect.

Ultimately, there’s no single rule for navigating office politics. It takes self-awareness, empathy, honesty, and a willingness to lean on your personal and professional networks for support. Attending one of UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education’s Career Advancement Network’s workshops, like The Value of Networking for Professional Development, can give you extra tools and connections to approach your work with clarity and confidence.

No matter where you are in your career, one principle holds true: focus on what you can do to make a positive impact on your colleagues and organization. That mindset will help you rise above office politics and keep your career moving forward.
