One’s most valuable personal asset is an ability to communicate effectively. To convey ideas and persuade an audience that a product or service is best suited to their needs, it is essential that one be able to speak articulately, in a well-organized, thoughtful, and impressive manner. In addition to a client-based audience, professionals must also be skilled in expressing their ideas and opinions to co-workers, employers and professional peers. This seminar will provide you an interactive concept review of presentation principles and best practices, followed by feedback and coaching tips to help you engage your audience effectively and with complete confidence. You will also learn how to conduct effective self-assessments, peer critique reviews, and different delivery styles to advance your high-impact presentation skills.

Instructor: Karen Nguyen, M.S., PMP, CSM has extensive experience in practicing and teaching project management framework, principals, and theories. Her passion is to deliver value and equip students with a distinctive blend of program management along with leadership skills for real-world experience and application. Karen is a recipient of the UCI Division of Continuing Education Alumni of the Year award, SoCal Most Powerful & Influential Woman of Diversity, and Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society for academic excellence. 00488 Bounce Back...to What?: Disaster Recovery Insights from Houston, TX and US Virgin Islands
Friday, October 15, 2021
12:00PM - 1:00PM
ucidce.zoom.us
The knee-jerk reaction after a disaster is to get back to "normal" as fast as possible -- to quickly rebuild homes, businesses and infrastructure so people can get back to their daily lives. But what if life before the disaster wasn't so great? Can the recovery process empower people to rebuild a better life for themselves and their community? Using the contexts of Houston, TX and the US Virgin Islands, both places that were hit hard during the 2017 Atlantic hurricane season, this webinar will outline why we tend to build back to pre-disaster conditions so quickly, the importance of identifying and addressing the root causes of risk and vulnerability, and ways communities can start to take charge of their own recoveries.

Floodplain managers play a crucial role in ensuring that communities are prepared for extreme weather events: they enforce floodplain development standards, educate residents about flood risk, and help plan for future events. While they play a huge role in decreasing our nation's flood risk, they also face several barriers to success – including the lack of resources and adequate information to inform decision-making and outreach. In this webinar, Susanna Pho of Forerunner will use case studies from her work to explore how communities of all sizes are investing in better data, technology, and processes to address these challenges. She will also discuss how the communities that she works with leverage incentives to encourage resident adaptation and mitigation.
