THE HUMAN UNDERSIDE OF CHINA'S ECONOMIC RISE

THE HUMAN UNDERSIDE OF CHINA’S ECONOMIC RISE
SS 314

Much of the world has been mesmerized by China’s economic miracle and its results. Millions of people have indeed been lifted out of poverty. However, there are still millions who have been left behind. This includes migrants from the countryside and a large number of poorly-educated urban workers who were fired to make industry competitive on the world market. The course will explore the political, economic and social reasons behind those problems.

Presenter: Professor Dorothy J. Solinger,
retired after 30 years of teaching in UCI’s Political Science Department. She has authored six books and edited another seven. Her research has focused on internal migration and urban poverty in China.
