December’s issue of Science magazine, the leading journal of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), goes out on a limb and describes the major scientific breakthroughs of the past year. We will review some of the selections, and discuss what qualifies them as breakthroughs, what the relevance to non-scientists may be, how future research pathways might be affected, and their status at the time of this presentation.
