SS 302 MODERN ARMENIAN HISTORY
The first lecture will cover Armenia from the 1890s to 1913. It will detail the Armenian experience living in the Russian and Ottoman Empires as well as in Iran. During this time, a cultural revival arose along with political reforms accompanied by persecution. A national revolutionary movement grew aimed at autonomy. The second lecture focuses on World War I, during which Armenians suffered persecution, expulsion and genocide leaving them facing genocide denial, memories and trauma.
Presenter: Houri Berbarian, is a UCI history professor and holds the Meghrouni Chair in Armenian Studies. She wrote Revolutionaries: Armenia and the Connected Revolutions in the Russian, Iranian, and Ottoman Worlds.
