ANATOMY OF A VOLCANO: KILAUEA 2018
ANATOMY OF A VOLCANO: KILAUEA 2018
SC 215
From late April into September 2018, the Kilauea volcano on the Big Island of Hawai’i put on a dramatic display of the power and beauty of an island shield volcano. Beginning and ending with the collapse of calderas, interspersed with a rapidly spewing and flowing set of eruptive fissures along a rift zone, and thousands of small-to-medium earthquakes, Kilauea left almost 14 square miles of the island covered in lava over its 4.5-mile flowage to the sea. The geologic setting, a short history, and dramatic pictures and videos will be presented to better understand this lifetime event.
