SC 201 THE REPLICATION CRISIS IN THE NATURAL & SOCIAL SCIENCES
This class examines the problem of replicating research results in the physical and social sciences. Although failure to reproduce findings has always been an issue, recently this has become a crisis in the fields of psychology and medicine.
September 22: The meaning of “replication” and some prominent examples of irreproducibility, focusing on why this is a concern in psychology and medicine.
September 29: Systematic studies in psychology where research results have been questioned and cases of fraud or failures occurred.
October 6: We identify proposed solutions and discuss methodology, statistics, publication policies, and institutional incentives.
