CHAUCER AND LOVE
CHAUCER AND LOVE
AH 110
Geoffrey Chaucer (c.1340-1400) is famous for his Canterbury Tales — a series of stories told by a remarkable variety of tellers, who are on a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral. Their stories swing from high to low, from idealism to parody. One of the tales is told by the Wife of Bath, who is one of the best known and least understood figures from the Canterbury Tales. Having been married five times, the wife is an expert on the status of women, and her “Prologue” sets out to take apart the anti-woman ideas of the medieval church.
