THE METROPOLITAN OPERA COMES TO OLLI

Our operatic journey continues. Using lecture presentations, CDs, and YouTube clips, we will discover the genius of Giacomo Puccini, Gaetano Donizetti, Giuseppe Verdi and Gioachino Rossini. We will examine their lives, the plots of the operas, and the singers. These four operas will come to life by the genius of the Metropolitan Opera Company and the creativity of modern technology.

Tuesday, January 9: Puccini’s Tosca. Tosca loves sweet Mario. But villainous Scarpia lusts for her. It can only lead to disaster (Broadcast on KUSC and selected theaters January 27, 2018, 10 AM)

Tuesday, January 16: Rossini’s Semiramide. Semiramide, believing that Arsace loves her, although he loves another, names him as her chosen successor. (Broadcast on KUSC and selected theaters March 10, 2018, 10 AM)

Tuesday, Jan 23: Verdi’s Luisa Miller. Luisa loves Rodolfo and he loves her. Forced by cunning villains, she writes him a letter falsely declaring she loves another. (Broadcast on KUSC and selected theaters April 14, 2018, 10 AM)

Tuesday, Jan 30: R. Donizetti’s L’Elizir D’Amore. Nemorino loves Adina but she plays hard to get. Enter Dr. Dolcarama who deals in love potions. (Broadcast on KUSC and selected theaters February 10, 2018, 10 AM)

For several years, Mr. Rothman has regaled OLLI members with his opera presentations. They bear witness to his passion, his expert knowledge and his charming humor. He has earned a degree in music, has studied opera all his life and was a supernumerary at Opera Pacific for ten years.
