THE PRITZKER ARCHITECTURAL PRIZE
THE PRITZKER ARCHITECTURAL PRIZE
Part one: The Architects and Their Work
AH 113
Often referred to as “architecture’s Nobel,” this international prize was established by the Pritzker family of Chicago through their Hyatt Foundation in 1979. It is granted annually to honor a living architect or architects whose work demonstrates talent, vision, and commitment and who has/have produced consistent and significant contributions to humanity and to the body of knowledge and expertise relative to the built environment. The award is conferred on the laureates at an invitation-only ceremony held each year at different architecturally significant sites selected from those throughout the world.
Throughout this two-part class (concluding in Spring 2018), we will look at selected winners of the prize, significant portions of their body of work, and the values both architectural and societal that their work manifested.
We will also examine some of the interesting controversies that have emerged in the selection of the laureates and the awarding of the prizes.
