CUBA: The Good, the Bad and the Beautiful

Many of us know only the U.S. side of relations with Cuba. This course will examine the history of U.S.- Cuba relations; provide an inside look at the scarcities in Cuba and how women cope with day-to-day meal preparations and the daily economic life in a two-currency economy. Finally, a look at Cuba's artistic world, young artists, art venues, and traditional and contemporary Cuban music.
Thursday, April 19: Professor Fernandez will introduce the course and Dr. Robert Duncan will present the History of U.S./Cuba Relations.
Thursday, April 26: Professor Hanna Garth will speak about how Cubans, especially women in the interior of the island, cope with scarcities and day-to-day meal preparations. Professor Mrinalini (Minu) Tankha will speak about daily economic life in a two-currency economy, two-sector (tourist vs local) economy.
Thursday, May 3: Christina Garcia will speak on Cuba’s artistic world, young artists, and art venues in Havana and other cities of Cuba. Professor Fernandez will talk about traditional and contemporary Cuban music.
