WHITE, WORKING-CLASS AMERICA:
Behind Hillbilly Elegy
SS 311

This course will explore the cultural divide exposed by J.D. Vance’s memoir Hillbilly Elegy and other recent publications on the white working class in America. Why are these Americans facing such dismal conditions today, and how have history and structural changes informed their attitudes and culture? Why do they feel so alienated and has this cultural divide always existed or is it a recent development? Understanding these complex factors allows us to better comprehend the political climate of America and current challenges facing working-class whites.

Presenter/Developer: Karen Linkletter, Ph.D.,
History Lecturer in American Studies at California State University and co-author of Drunkers Lost Art of Management. She is also a professional cellist and has lectured on the influence of the arts on leadership.
