The architecture of the Aquarium of the Pacific is inspired by the towering breaking waves of the Pacific and mirrors the fluid and dynamic temper of the ocean. It hosts 1.5 million visitors a year, including 150,000 elementary school children.

The Aquarium features a collection of more than 11,000 animals representing over 500 different species. Exhibits introduce the inhabitants and seascapes of the Pacific, while also focusing on specific conservation messages associated with each region. Activities of the Aquarium go far beyond exhibits to include diverse marine science and conservation ventures. The Lorikeet Forest walk-through aviary houses five subspecies of rainbow lorikeet. The earth friendly garden on the front lawn features California native drought resistant plants as well as a very efficient irrigation system.

Following the Aquarium visit and lunch we will embark upon a 45-minute narrated cruise around Long Beach Harbor, one of the most active ports in the world. Vistas include the picturesque shoreline of downtown Long Beach, the Queen Mary and the open ocean. See massive container ships from around the world docked at state-of-the-art cargo terminals, and the offshore “oil islands.” Depending on the schedule some participants may be able to take a Behind the Scenes Tour for an additional fee of $19.

$75 (includes admission to Aquarium, Harbor Cruise, bus, and driver’s tip) Lunch is on your own at Café Scuba on the second floor or you may bring a lunch for the outside picnic area.

Location:
Bus departs from Lakeview Senior Center at 10:00 AM (see map at the back of the catalog). Please arrive by 9:45 AM with your completed UCI Waiver Release and Emergency Contact forms (available at www.olliiuci.wordpress.com under Facilitator Center).
