HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PHILLIP MORTON ROTH
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, PHILLIP MORTON ROTH
AH 110
This presentation celebrates the 85th birthday of Philip Roth, America’s honored “Living Literary Legend.” It showcases his acclaimed work and offers an assessment and appreciation of his stature as an American literary icon.
Roth is not just a preeminent storyteller, but an astute chronicler of the past eighty years of American history. He writes about the imagined lives at the center of dramatic critical historical events. A few examples: the WW-II era isolationist sentiment and paranoid politics depicted in The Plot Against America; the McCarthy era hysteria in I Married A Communist; the radical politics of the 60’s in American Pastoral. And, although Roth says he is retired, with his restless mind and love of writing, he may yet unveil something new to surprise us.
Presenter: Dr. Jerry Binder
has lectured extensively on prominent authors and enduring themes in American literature and is a scholar on the work of Philip Roth. He has been a popular instructor at OLLI for the past twenty years. The focus of his research and teaching is on the intellectual, cultural and social crosscurrents at the intersection of the humanities and the social sciences.
