THE VICTORIAN THRILLERS
THE VICTORIAN THRILLERS:
WOMEN SENSATIONALISTS
AH 103
In the late Victorian Age, a new genre, the Thriller, became the rage. Notable sensationalist writers included several colorful women such as Marie Corelli and Marie Lowndes. This class will explore a delightful era of popular British literature, taking a look at the phenomenon of the thriller, illuminating the major women writers involved, and, finally, making an investigation into Corelli and Lowndes. These works give a remarkable insight into the private terror of the time.
The first session will discuss The Sorrows of Satan by Corelli (1895) and the second will discuss The Lodger by Lowndes (1913). Both are available on the web for free.
