Instructor Spotlight: Dr. Erin Avery, Independent Educational Consultant
Dr. Erin Avery, CEP
Why did you decide to become an instructor?
An esteemed colleague identified me and invited me to join the program as an instructor. That was 10 years ago.
What’s your favorite lesson to teach and why?
I truly enjoy teaching about ethics in our field of educational consulting. There is a forum discussion question: “If push comes to shove, is it better to fake that you know accurate information or tell the client that you don’t know but will research and get back to them?” I enjoy seeing students respond with honesty that it is always best to be truthful.
What’s unique about your teaching style?
My teaching style is very interpersonal. I enjoy making a personal connection with students and ensuring that they know that I will remain as a professional contact and mentor long after the course ends. It makes me so pleased when students contact me for references to professional organizations later in the certificate program.
What do you find most rewarding about being an instructor?
There is nothing more powerful than to have a direct influence on the future of our profession. I have always loved being the first phase of the UCI certificate program in independent educational consulting because I teach the very first course that students encounter. I pride myself on setting an encouraging tone so that students proceed through the program with confidence and eagerness.
