Introduction to Radiometry: The Propagation and Measurement of Optical Radiant Energy

An elective course in the Certificate Program in Optical Instrument Design and the Certificate Program in Optical Engineering.

Course Description

This course presents the basic quantities and units of radiometry and photometry, followed by radiometric propagation laws and approximations that allow calculation of optical radiant power transferred from a source to a receiver. The equation of radiative transfer is introduced, and simplifications are presented that allow the solution of many real-world problems. The course covers source properties, blackbody radiation laws and approximations, and properties of optical materials including transmission, reflection, absorption, and emission. It also introduces detectors of optical radiant energy, figures of merit for visible and infrared systems, and radiometric calibration. We will use all these components to develop a top-level radiometric system design that you can use within your present company or a start-up business.

Prerequisite: Undergraduate physics and mathematics courses with an understanding of numerical integration.

NOTE: This course is an online course, utilizing Zoom Meeting for extended lectures and office hours. Office hours are not mandatory but are optional for discussion. Students will need to have access to the internet, have speakers and a microphone. For those that live in different time zones please notify instructor on day one of any conflicts about being able to participate in the live meeting sessions.

Instructor


Barbara G. Grant is an electro-optical engineer whose books include: Getting Started with UAV Imaging Systems: A Radiometric Guide (2016), Field Guide to Radiometry (2011), and co-author of The Art of Radiometry (2010), all published by SPIE Press. She has taught professionals since 2009 in a variety of venues including UC Irvine, Santa Clara University, SPIE, Georgia Tech Professional Education, government agencies, and commercial firms. She received the M. S. in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona in 1989 where her graduate work was in radiometric calibration of spaceborne imaging sensors. Prior to becoming an electro-optics consultant in 1995, she was employed in the aerospace and defense industry, holding engineering positions at Lockheed-Martin and NASA-Goddard contractors, among others. She is a Fellow of SPIE.
