College Admissions Consulting Resources

A required course in the Independent Educational Consultant Certificate Program.

Course Description

There are hundreds of books and websites devoted to the college search and planning process. This course focuses on helping you to identify the most reliable resources for college planning, examination of these tools and how to use them in one’s practice. Topics include: identifying personality types, evaluating colleges from afar, college trip planning for you and your clients, dealing with selective college admissions and managing expectations, assessing quality, extracurricular activities, and summer planning. Students will use the suggested resources to create a college list as their final project in this course.

We highly recommend students complete EDUC_X406 Principles of Independent Educational Consulting prior to enrolling in this course. See enrollment confirmation for login information. Due to high demand, early enrollment recommended.

NOTE: This course may have optional, live sessions via Zoom. The sessions will be recorded and posted for students who are not able to attend. The Zoom meeting link and password to join will be provided in the course. A device with audio and visual will be needed to participate. The following student guide provides additional resources/information on how to use and access the course’s Zoom sessions.

Instructor


Joanne LaSpina is a Certified Educational Planner (CEP). She has worked in higher education as a career counselor and within the office of Student Affairs, in addition to her work as a counselor in a variety of settings. Joanne has earned a certificate for Independent Educational Consultants from the University of California Irvine and continues to take classes and workshops to stay ahead of trends in the field. Her memberships in the Independent Educational Consultants Association, National Association for College Admissions Counseling (NACAC) and the Pennsylvania and New Jersey ACAC’s offer a wealth of college knowledge that Joanne passes along to her families. She regularly participates in conferences, seminars and workshops related to college counseling and visits 25-30 different colleges each year. Joanne is a virtual coach for ScholarMatch and serves as a mentor for IECA members. She co-hosts College Conversations, which was born out of the start of the pandemic to offer IECA members who could no longer visit campuses, a way to stay current and learn about colleges. She has guided hundreds of students and families through their college search and planning.
