Principles of Independent Educational Consulting

This is the first required course in the Independent Educational Consultant Certificate Program.

Course Description

This course is designed to introduce a career as an Independent Educational Consultant. It will familiarize students with the professional issues faced when advising students in the college planning process. Topics in this course examine the principles and practices associated with the development of an independent college counseling practice. Highlighted is the role of the educational consultant as a resource for students and parents and the operating philosophies connected to that role. Additional topics include: the complexities of college choice, ways to make the practice successful, and what is changing in the admission and higher education landscape.

NOTE: This course may have optional, live sessions via Zoom. The sessions will be recorded and posted for students who are not able to attend. The Zoom meeting link and password to join will be provided in the course. A device with audio and visual will be needed to participate. The following student guide provides additional resources/information on how to use and access the course’s Zoom sessions.

Ann Rossbach, MAT, is the owner and principal consultant in Rossbach & O’Connor Educational Consulting. For the past 17 years, she has assisted families in making educational choices, mostly in the college space. In addition, she advises families regarding secondary school choice and curriculum and also assists graduate students in their educational pursuits in the areas of speech and hearing therapy, psychology, nursing, and physician assistant programs. Ann’s expertise has assisted hundreds of students to understand their needs and strengths to make wise educational choices. She includes affordability and learning styles as components of these decisions. Ann, who has served in several leadership roles in the Independent Educational Consultants Association, is also a regular contributor to IECA’s semi-annual conferences, creating or contributing to workshops on affordability, learning differences, counseling, the landscape of college admissions, improving your practice through process management, and leadership.
