Introduction to Spa & Wellness: Industry and Operations

A required course in the Spa and Wellness Management Certificate Program.

Course Description

Explore the history and evolution of the spa industry and its place within the global wellness market. Obtain an overview of the convergence of spas, healthcare, tourism and hospitality among others within this global landscape. Review current business models, definition and market segmentation of the spa sector including day, resort, medical, destination, wellness/ lifestyle management programs, as well as emerging trends. Discuss spa operations from the standpoint of maximizing business success and acquire the knowledge and skills required to manage and operate a profitable spa or wellness center. Topics include: market review and competitive analysis, an overview of current industry statistics, and spa/wellness menu development. This course will also include an introduction to generating revenue, retailing, customer service, human resources, developing standard operating procedures, and effective reservation protocols.

NOTE: This course may have optional, live sessions via Zoom. The sessions will be recorded and posted for students who are not able to attend. Shawn Hallum, M.S., has been an established and passionate member of the resort, hotel, spa, retail, and wellness communities since 1995. He has served in leadership and executive roles for The Sports Club Company, Plus One Health Management, Bacara Resort & Spa, Premier Salons, Red Door Spas, and Starwood Hotels. His guidance and contributions have had a positive impact on retailers including Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, Holt Renfrew and Macy’s. Shawn’s passion for coaching and people development enables him to instruct and mentor undergraduate students around the world as an adjunct faculty member with the American College of Healthcare Sciences. Academically, Shawn holds a Master’s Degree in Complementary Alternative Medicine and undergraduate degrees in Business Administration and Sports Management (Wellness and Fitness). He is a certified Spa Supervisor with the International Spa Association. Shawn also has training and certifications in massage therapy, reiki, personal training, and performance enhancement.
