Sight Translation

A required course in the Interpretation Certificate Program.

Course Description

This six-week course in Sight Translation (ST) emphasizes the practice of reading a text in English and then effectively and efficiently translating it orally into Spanish. Students will receive a series of Sight Translation assessments, and are required to prepare technical glossaries in assigned areas throughout the course. Each week, students will learn useful ST techniques, acquire appropriate vocabulary, and solve problems of contrastive syntax. Specific topics will include principles of localization, equivalent structures, re-structuring techniques, and language interference. Students will also learn about speed-reading, delivery style, and interpreting lab practices. Materials include high, regular, and low-level texts, drawn from a variety of legal, financial, and technical sources.

Prerequisite(s): SPANISH X426 Essentials of Interpretation

William Harvey, M.S., is a nationally recognized teacher, author, and motivational speaker, often considered by experts to be one of the best Spanish instructors in American today. He is founder and president of Language Services Institute, Inc., a successful on-site language school, which has had some of the most comprehensive training programs in Southern California. As a 30-year veteran of teaching Spanish and ESL, Bill has received national media attention from CNN, Spanish News Network, Time magazine, The New York Times, and The Los Angeles Times. He is author of several books, including Spanish for Gringos, Ingles para Latinos, Spanish for Health Care Professionals, Spanish for Law Enforcement Personnel, and Spanish for the Construction Trade. Mr. Harvey has also gained attention on the internet, while appearing in numerous healthcare webinars and audio conferences. He currently teaches Spanish in a variety of healthcare facilities in Orange County, California.
