Paralegal Internship

An elective course in the Paralegal Certificate Program. To enroll in this course you must be an official certificate candidate and have completed the following required courses: Fundamentals of the Paralegal Profession, Legal Research, Legal Writing, Contracts, Ethics, Civil Litigation I, Civil Litigation II and Technology Practicum.

Course Description

Examine the role of paralegals in the delivery of legal services through an internship in a law firm, corporate in-house counsel's office, government agency, or other legal setting. Interns must attend one meeting on campus with the Internship Coordinator, work in a legal setting for 100 hours during the quarter, maintain a daily work log, and submit a detailed written report of their experience. Students will be assigned internships from a directory of established partner host sites based on host’s availability and approval. Student’s preference for type of law and location is taken into consideration but is not guaranteed. Internships must be unpaid to count as course credit. IMPORTANT REGISTRATION NOTE: Registration for this class closes three weeks before the start date to allow time for placement.

Instructor


Kai Williamson, M. Ed., has been a paraprofessional for 30 years. She spent the first seven years of her career in a law firm working in various specialty areas including litigation, family law, corporate finance, and real estate. She then transitioned to in-house positions working for various Fortune 500 companies. Kai currently works for Alorica Inc. as a Sr. International Corporate Paralegal and Director of Legal Operations. She is the President of the Orange County Paralegal Association (“OCPA”) and served a two-year term in 2009-2010. Kai is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the 2008 National Super Star Paralegal of the Year Award, the 2012 UCI DCE Distinguished Advisory Board Member award, 2012 National Affiliates Award from the National Association of Legal Assistants (“NALA”) the 2013 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Orange County Paralegal Association (“OCPA”), the 2015 UCI DCE Distinguished Instructor Award and the 2019 UCI DCE Dean’s Outstanding Service Award for her mentoring work with students.
