Civil Litigation I

A required course in the Paralegal Certificate Program.

Course Description

Examine the paralegal’s role in the beginning phase of the civil litigation process. Court systems, litigation related Federal and state statutes, locals rules, calendaring of deadlines, pre-filing considerations, complaints and responsive pleadings will be explored.

NOTE: This course uses live sessions via Zoom.  A device with audio and visual will be needed to participate. The following student guide provides additional resources/information on how to use and access your courses Zoom sessions.

Renato Izquieta, J.D., is a staff attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Orange County (LASOC). He has been teaching at UCI for 10 years. He was admitted to the California State Bar and in Federal Court in 1997. He is also admitted before the U.S. Tax Court. He has been working in Legal Services Since 1997 and has been with LASOC since 2001. At the Legal Aid Society, Izquieta works in the litigation unit practicing several disciplines in the areas of Housing, family law, SSI, IRS tax, public benefits and other legal matters. Izquieta is also the supervising attorney for the Homeless Outreach Project and the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic. The Homeless project provides direct services to the homeless and veterans throughout Orange County. Izquieta through the Low-Income Tax Payer Clinic assists taxpayers with tax debt problems and other tax controversy matters before the IRS and Tax Court. Currently, Izquieta is a Commission member with the ABA for the Commission on Homeless and Poverty. Recently, Izquieta was appointed to sit as Judge Pro Tem for the Collaborative Courts for the Orange County Superior Court. These courts include Homeless Court, Veterans Court and Drug Court.
