Networking and Securing IoT Devices

Course Description

The Internet of Things (IoT) is changing our lives using connected devices. This course begins with an overview of networking fundamentals that are essential for reliable and secure IoT device connections. It covers specific networking technologies, protocols, and security issues that are important for IoT devices. Participants explore how to connect devices to IoT platforms such as Amazon AWS IoT, Microsoft Azure IoT, and ThingSpeak. Since there are now so many IoT devices and since the technology is relatively new, security is a major concern for IoT device developers and users. The course examines how to design strong security into IoT devices. Course participants gain hands-on experience using the Raspberry Pi hardware/software platform to explore specific concepts and technologies that are important for connecting and securing embedded IoT systems. For the final course project, participants outline a specific IoT application, evaluate the networking and security issues, and connect a device to an IoT platform.

Students are required to purchase the following:

  1. SparkFun XBee 3 Wireless Kit (includes 2 of the 802.15.4 Xbee 3 modules, 1 Xbee Explorer, 1 Xbee Shield, and headers that must be soldered to the shield)
