Teaching English Grammar

Course Description

This course is designed to introduce participants to various methods that could be used to teach grammar in an English as a second or foreign language context. Course participants will study different approaches to teaching grammar and learn how to prepare effective lesson plans around a specific grammar point or structure. Participants will be presented with principles and strategies for teaching grammar as an English language skill and will create and share two lesson plans with class members. Another important component of this course will be the opportunity for participants to observe and reflect on their own pedagogy, considering the methods and strategies studied in this class.

Instructor


Tyler Barrett, Ph.D., Second Language Teaching, is an instructor of English as a Second Language at the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center in San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Barrett has been teaching and training ESL/EFL instructors for over 10 years. He has taught English in public schools in Japan, and online M.Ed courses and undergraduate courses at the University of Calgary. Dr. Barrett is an editor of Asian EFL Journal and The Journal of English as an International Language. He has published in academic journals that include Pedagogy, Culture, & Society, Language Policy, International Journal of the Sociology of Language, and The Journal of English as an International Language and he is the co-editor of the books Critical Inquiries in the Sociolinguistics of Globalization and Transcultural Flows of English and Education in Asian Contexts.
