Foundations of Human Resources Management
A required course in the Human Resources Management certificate program.
Course Description
Human resources management is vital to the financial health and productivity of all organizations. This important function provides the crucial link between management and employees in the public and private sector. In this course you will learn the fundamentals of human resources management. Begin by acquiring an in-depth understanding of the charter and mission of human resources in the industrial, service and public sectors. Then multiply your role and knowledge of the major elements of the personnel process including recruiting, interviewing, wage and labor issues, benefits, compensation, employment, regulations, documentation and termination, while gaining an insider's grasp of employee relations, work force diversity and human resources planning and research. Finally, you will address various theories regarding employee morale, organizational behavior and group dynamics. If you are interested in changing or advancing your career, this course will give you an overview of this growing field.
NOTE: This course may have optional, live sessions via Zoom. The sessions will be recorded and posted for students who are not able to attend. Instructor
Mary Glanville is currently Principal at MYG Consulting, providing human capital consulting to life sciences organizations and their boards of directors. Between January 2011 and July 2017 Mary was the Senior Vice President, Human Capital at Regulus Therapeutics, Inc. providing executive level human resources and organizational development support to the organization and it’s Board. Prior to joining Regulus Mary was the Vice President, Human Capital at Anadys Pharmaceuticals where she was responsible for all aspects of human resources and organizational development in San Diego, and previously Boston and Heidelberg, Germany where she held positions of increased responsibility since April 2001. Previously, she served as Director of Human Resources at Inflazyme Pharmaceuticals (2000 – 2001) and Director of Human Resources for Inex Pharmaceuticals (1994 – 2000). Mary studied Psychology at the University of Toronto and has a B.Sc. in Computer Information System Management from the DeVry Institute of Technology. She has a Human Resources Management Certificate from the British Columbia Institute of Technology and has received a Chartered Professional in Human Resources designation from the Human Resources
Management Association of Canada. Ms. Glanville served as an instructor at UCSD Extension and is on the Board of the BEDC, the BAODN and is a past Board member of
SHRM.
