Montessori Philosophy and Pedagogy

Prerequisite: Montessori Certification requires a full academic year of concurrent Monday through Friday internship in a Montessori/Early Childhood Program under the direct supervision of an experienced certified Montessori teacher.

You are required to attend the orientation held on Tuesday, August 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

This class focuses on comparative child development theory from prenatal through age 6 and examines Child Development theory and early childhood education. As such it also includes a full overview of the Montessori method and philosophy of education in that context. As a specific look at the child, family and community, it provides instruction on socialization of the child from birth through early childhood and “discipline” or normalization through age appropriate activity and classroom management. It introduces a look at equity in education, diversity, special needs and the family and community influence on child development. This course can be audited for general information about Montessori education, but must be taken for a letter grade for those seeking Montessori Credential from AMS/MACTE. This class begins with a required orientation meeting for those pursuing a Montessori credential. Following orientation, this class meets on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and one Saturday monthly. Completion of the Montessori curriculum classes and a full academic year of practicum are required to become credentialed. Upon completion of the coursework, one will earn 19 quarter units from UCI Division of Continuing Education and an AMS/MACTE credential (American Montessori Society and Montessori Accreditation Council for Teacher Education). Please Note: The age group for your studies and practicum must match the age for the credential being sought.
