Course Description
This hand-on course provides an understanding of the basic principles of optical design, starting from a graphical pre-design. The primary emphasis in this class will be to understand, recognize and correct optical aberrations. These principles will be applied to the design of lens systems ranging from the simple landscape lens and its derivatives through to the Cooke triplet, using the Zemax Optical Design software as necessary to fully understand the performance of these design forms. The knowledge and skills developed in this course will prepare you for further advanced study in the field of optical design and analysis.
Topics to be covered include: first and third order optics, image formation, paraxial ray tracing, aberration theory, optical design principles, pre-design of optical systems, use of optical design software, image quality, diffraction and the Modulation Transfer Function. Students will be provided access to the Zemax program for use during the course.
Prerequisites: College level algebra, physics and familiarity with optics or equivalent experience.
NOTE: This course utilizes Zoom for weekly live online synchronous meetings. These sessions make up the lab portion of the course, where you will be provided with optical design software license information. The sessions will be recorded and posted for students who are not able to attend, watching the recording is mandatory. The Zoom meeting link and password to join will be provided in your course. Students will need to have access to the internet, have speakers and a microphone to participate. The following student guide provides additional resources/information on how to use and access your courses Zoom sessions.
Students will be provided an optical design software license for use in the course.
Instructor
Mary Turner received her Ph.D. in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona, and is currently Principal Engineer at Edmund Optics. Dr. Turner has significant design experience in a wide variety of optical and illumination systems, including vision systems, telescopic systems, spectrometers and projection systems. She has spent much of her career teaching software based optical design and analysis courses to more than 5000 students worldwide.
