Course Description

Students will develop an understanding of the complexity associated with developing a school community and relating to a school’s communities. This course provides an opportunity to explore and practice demonstrating leadership skills to develop a coherent community of practice by working with teachers to optimize student learning. In addition, students will have an opportunity to learn how to work effectively with families and community members; recognize the goals and aspirations of diverse families; respond to diverse community interests and needs; and mobilize community resources in the service of student achievement. The major emphasis of this course is on developing the knowledge and skills necessary for a school principal to develop and maintain a school community and manage community resources to optimize opportunities for student learning.

Instructor


George Lopez, Ed.D., is currently serving as the principal at Woodsboro Elementary School. He has over 12 years of severing as a principal in both elementary and middle school. He has a B.A. in Liberal Studies from California State University, Fullerton (CSUF), a Masters in Educational Technology from CSUF, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from CSUF. George has taught at CSUF Masters and School Administrative program. Also, he understands how to apply educational theory to practice. This experience has supported him to function in Union negations, school district reconfiguration, education laws, leadership theories, emotional intelligence, Professional Learning Communities(PLC), Response to Intervention (RTI), wellness programs, school budget, master schedule, Restorative Practice (RP), Interview process, family and community building, student and staff morale, school crisis, and leadership impact on school culture.
