Advanced Lens Design

A required course in the Certificate Program Optical Engineering and an elective in the Optical Instrument Design Certificate Program.

Course Description

Understand optical systems with first and third, higher-order analysis and aberration theory. Explore design principles such as bending, symmetry, stop shift, and lens splitting. Apply these principles and knowledge to various optical systems with tolerancing analysis. Learn user-defined merit functions, and learn and practice advanced lens designs for photographic systems, telecentric lenses (machine visions), zoom systems, scan (f-theta lens), microscopes (objective and eyepieces), and telescopes.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of EECS_X493, or have prior experience or knowledge in Lens Design and Zemax Software. College level algebra, physics and familiarity with optics or equivalent experience.

NOTE: This course utilizes Zoom for weekly live online synchronous meetings. These sessions make up the lab portion of the course, where you will be provided with optical design software license information. The sessions will be recorded and posted for students who are not able to attend, watching the recording is mandatory. The Zoom meeting link and password to join will be provided in your course. Students will need to have access to the internet, have speakers and a microphone to participate. The following student guide provides additional resources/information on how to use and access your courses Zoom sessions.

Successful completion of a qualifying assignment within this course offers you the opportunity to earn an Alternative Digital Credential (ADC). Also referred to as a digital badge, an ADC is a virtual record of specific skills and competencies you have acquired and provides a verifiable way for you to share your educational achievements with employers, colleagues and others via social platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter. Click here to view the Telecentric Lens: Machine Vision System Design badge opportunity presented with this course and explore the necessary criteria to earn the ADC. Learn more about Alternative Digital Credentials and how they can help you demonstrate your commitment to professional development and distinguish yourself in a competitive job market.

Instructor

Joshua S. Jo, PhD. is a principal optical design engineer at Apple. He has over 20 years of experience in various areas, which include lens designs in fields of eyepiece, 3D projection design, 3D confocal optics, DOE, F-theta lens, optical system with VIR, NWIR, MWIR, LWIR, Gaussian beam propagation, cell phone lens design, machine vision, mirror system design, telescope design, metrology system built, 2D/3D inspection system, and Koehler illumination. He has been building optical systems starting from concepts to final stages in small, mid, and big size companies and worked as the recipient/main contributor of SBIR contracts (NASA Goddard space center, US ARMY, US NAVY, US Air force). Numerous lectures have been done through 20 years of lens designs, including UCI Division of Continuing Education, various universities and research institutes. Received a distinguished instructor award in 2013 for his teachings in Lens Design at UCI Division of Continuing Education.
