Course Description
Contemporary issues of cultural and socioeconomic diversity in public education. Ethnic, racial, and religious composition of the State and local community. Concepts of cultural values and language diversity. Programs and procedures for meeting instructional needs of limited English proficient pupils. Principles and procedures for involving the family in school activities.

Instructor
Morgan Appel, MBA, AD, is Assistant Dean of Education and Community Outreach (ECO) at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies and previously served as Director of Education at UC Irvine Division of Continuing Education. Appel is widely published and specializes in the development, implementation and assessment of integrated holistic solutions for underperforming schools. Before coming to DCE, he was Senior Faculty Research Associate for UC Irvine's Claire Trevor School of the Arts, and worked as a consultant for private and public schools and districts across California. Appel has also served as a professional reader and reviewer for the California Department of Education (Gifted and Talented Education) and the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTEL, Reading, PASC and Clear Credential programs). He is an instructor in the CTEL, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE), and Parent and Caregiver Education programs at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies.
