Introduction to Creativity and Innovation

This is a required course in the Innovation and Product Development Specialized Studies.

Course Description

This course introduces the students to the various theoretical concepts related to the human creative process, developing creative ideas, and converting ideas into innovative solutions or products. Topics emphasize the importance of creating a sustainable process to continually innovate in the areas of product, process and service innovation. Students will be introduced to various common tools and methods to promote creativity in others, contribute to a creative team, manage development frameworks alongside creativity, and establish a culture of creativity within an organization. This course prepares students to contribute to their organizational needs for the continuous and successful development of new products and services.

G. Scott Snider is the co-founder of a multi-disciplinary product development firm in Baltimore, serving clients around the world.
For 25 years, he's served as Product Development Project Manager, Strategist, Researcher, and Industrial Designer for companies that include General Motors, Stanley Black & Decker, PRS Guitars, U.S. Department of Defense and several startups and inventors. In addition to teaching this course at UCI, he is also an adjunct professor teaching the Intersections of Business and Design to dual Masters’ degree candidates attending the Johns Hopkins Carey School of Business and the Maryland Institute College of Art. As a named inventor on 98 design and utility patents, he leverages his broad experience in consumer research, trend analysis, materials and processes, visual brand language development, green design, and global strategy for product communications & iconography. Scott's strengths lie in innovations from napkin sketch ideas through design, engineering, development and manufacturing for commercialization – he brings breakthrough ideas to life.
