Effective Teaching of K-3 ELA with A2i Software Tools

Course Description

This course focuses on the use of A2i Software developed by Learning Ovations in partnership with the University of California, Irvine. It will support classroom teachers with students in K through 3rd grade classrooms to better understand and apply evidence-based practices during their English Language Arts (ELA) instruction. Teachers will develop an understanding of why third grade reading proficiency is such a critical skill, that predicts many long-term outcomes in a student’s life. Teachers will also gain insight as to why literacy is so critical and how reading ability serves as the primary vehicle for accumulating knowledge in the upper elementary and middle/high school years. Teachers who participate in the course will gain a better understanding of how to use the tools and support available to deliver this critical instruction to students, apply evidenced-based practices in their classroom, put insights from literacy expertise and coaches into action.

This course is designed for participants from Bradford Preparatory School. The grade option for this course is defaulted to Pass/No Pass.

Instructor


Renee Cullum, M.Ed. is a Literacy Outcomes Specialist for Learning Ovations in Southern California. She has worked in education for the last eight years. Ms. Cullum currently works with about 10 school sites across Southern California to provide in-person and virtual professional development to classroom teachers and administrators. She coaches teachers and administrators on using A2i Professional Support System with efficacy, develop small group models for teachers to deliver individualized instruction. She also supports principals and other school leaders to co-design a plan for school-wide literacy instruction.

Robin Collins, MS, Ed., is the Director for School Outcomes on the East Coast for Learning Ovations. She has more than 15 years of experience in the field of education ranging from K-6 classroom teacher to K-3 building administrator. She has led teacher training programs and professional development for teachers across several states on the East Coast, as well as coached and managed educators ranging in experience from new to tenured. Robin’s passion lies in Early Literacy Instruction and Teacher Leadership. She has spent most of her career working with students and educators in the K-3 environment. She is well versed in using data to drive instruction, building relationships with students, teachers, and families and in using the Science of Reading to drive literacy instruction in the classroom.

Betty Lou Fox, M.Ed., is a Literacy Outcomes Specialist with Learning Ovations. She has more than 3 decades of experience in education as a classroom teacher and elementary principal. She also has extensive experience serving as an early education Executive Director here in the US as well as at a multicultural preschool in Yokosuka, Japan. In her current role with Learning Ovations, Betty Lou creates and provides customized professional development to support teachers in using the research-based technology tool, A2i, which stands for Assessment to Instruction. She works closely with teachers to shift pedagogy from a “one-size-fits-all” instructional mindset to true differentiation within the classroom.

Genevieve Gadea is the Director for School Outcomes on the West Coast for Learning Ovations. She has more than 15 years of experience in the field of education. She has served as a classroom teacher in the state of Florida, founded a school in South Central, California for the KIPP: LA Charter Network, and held a K-6 Reading Intervention position in Southern California. Currently, she collaborates with school districts in Southern California co-designing plans for district-wide literacy instruction with a focus on individualized instruction. She is trained in the Science of Reading and uses data to drive instruction. She has mentored a range of adult learners. Her passion lies in providing equitable literacy instruction to all students.

Alia Gates, M.A has more than 17 years of experience in the classroom and in the educational technology landscape and is a fully credentialed teacher in California and Hawaii with a master's degree in education focusing on Literacy and Multicultural pedagogy. In addition to her many years as a classroom teacher, she also has expertise in teacher mentorship and training. Her experience with mentorship includes working as master teacher for San Jose State University, University of San Francisco, CalTEACH and as a Beginning Teacher Support and Assessment (BTSA) site mentor and master teacher for the Cupertino Unified School District. Her expertise includes: Assessment and Data, Differentiated Instruction, Adult Learning, Virtual Learning Environments, Classroom Management, Teacher Training/Coaching, Literacy and Multicultural Education and community engagement.

Lauren Lupien, M.A., is a highly experienced education professional with passion for early literacy, innovation, and serving students, fellow teachers, and school administrators. She has extensive coaching experience as a Senior Literacy Consultant charged with delivering quality professional development to teachers and administrators focusing on small group implementation, differentiation and A2i usage. She is an innovative, dynamic educator with 12 years of 1st-5th grade classroom experience. Her areas of expertise include science of reading, reader’s and writer’s workshop, Project Based Learning and Understanding by Design. She is very well versed in balanced literacy framework and teacher leadership.

Alva M. Perry, Ed.D, is a learning outcome specialist for Learning Ovations. She has more than 20 years’ experience in the field of education. She has served as an elementary school teacher, Language Arts curriculum specialist, literacy coach, and assistant principal. During her tenure, she has led professional development at the district and site level in reading instruction and language acquisition. She has more than 8 years’ experience as a reading instructional coach. She is trained in the science of reading, adult learning theory, and cognitive coaching which enable her to share expertise using research-based methodology and learning motivation theory to reach a broad-base of adult learners.

Sara Ruffner, M.Ed., is a Literacy Outcomes Specialist for Learning Ovations. She has more than a decade of classroom teaching experience in the elementary grades. She has served as a technology and literacy lead while teaching in public and private schools. Her strengths include modeling how to lead a data driven classroom where assessment always drives instruction and using best practices in the classroom based on current research.
