A required course in the Esports Management Specialized Studies Program.
Go on a journey through the history of Esports and gain vantage points from developers, athletes, fans, sponsors and media. Examine relationships in the Esports communities and understand how their different roles affect each other. Explore Esports from behind the scenes and learn what it means to be involved in Esports. Learn the structures of what an Esports organizations might look like and build the groundwork for an understanding of the Esports industry.
Esports is an emerging as a global industry; Overview of Esports will introduce learners to the roles and influences that game developers have in the industry. Learners get a glimpse into the structures of an organization and how it builds a brand. Learners will also be informed of the jobs available in Esports and where to get started in order to be involved.
This online course may include live webinars using an online meeting software called Zoom. The dates of these webinars would be determined during the first week of class. All webinars will be recorded and posted on the course website for those who cannot participate in the live sessions. You may access your online course by 12pm (noon) Pacific Standard Time on the start date through your UCI DCE web account at https://ce.uci.edu/. Select “My Account,” then “My Courses” from the menu on the left, and lastly “Access Canvas” to access your online course. Instruction begins promptly on the start date. If you enrolled on or after the start date, you may access your online course one hour from the time of your enrollment. Jimmy Baratta, J.D. is an esports entrepreneur. Through his consultancy group, FT Empire, Jimmy has worked with some of the biggest names in gaming and entertainment. Jimmy is a strategic advisor and shareholder for XSET. He serves on the advisory board for Reuters syndicated news outlet The Esportz Network. He also consults for Fallen Media and A.I. software developer Wizard Labs. Additionally, alongside seed investors from FaZe Clan, Jimmy founded a nonprofit esports league: The North American Collegiate League. His past projects have included: FaZe Clan, Razer, GameStop, Chief Keef, YBN Nahmir, and more. Prior to working in gaming, Jimmy was a practicing attorney for over 7 years.
