Course Description

Enhance your knowledge of the application of physical and chemical principles to solving environmental problems. Gain new insight into the scientific process as used in environmental management. Learn an interdisciplinary approach using chemistry, physics, geology, meteorology, bioremediation and engineering principles to identify, evaluate and manage multi-media environmental problems. This course will be of interest to those who have some background in science, but not necessarily a focus on the physical sciences.

Prerequisite: One year of college chemistry, or CHEM X470, Introductory Chemistry of Hazardous Materials.

Instructor


Brianne Archer, B.S., M.S., a Supervising Engineer, is a licensed Professional Civil Engineer and a Certified Permitting Professional with the South Coast Air Quality Management District. Ms. Archer’s primary responsibilities include environmental site assessments (Phase I and Phase II), remediation plans, and human health risk assessments. Ms. Archer is well-versed is data presentation and evaluation. As a Professional Engineer, Ms. Archer has prepared several storm water pollution prevention plans (SWPPP) and Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure (SPCC) Plans. Ms. Archer is well versed in regulatory compliance issues and has prepared plans and permits for state and local agencies, including National Discharge Pollution Elimination System (NPDES) permits, industrial wastewater discharge permits, hazardous materials business plans, compliance documentation for hazardous waste storage and treatment permitting, emergency contingency plans, standard operating procedures, and in-house environmental management plans.

Ms. Archer has over 15 years of experience in environmental consulting. Ms. Archer earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Southern California in 2000, a Master’s Degree in Civil (Environmental) Engineering from California State University, Fullerton in 2010, and an Environmental Management certificate from the University of California, Irvine.
