Course Description

Understand optical systems with first and third, higher order analysis. Explore design principles such as bending, symmetry, stop shift, and lens splitting. Apply these principles to various optical systems with tolerancing. Learn advanced lens designs for photographic systems, telecentric lenses, zoom systems, microscopes, and telescopes.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of EECS_X493, or have prior experience or knowledge in Lens Design and Zemax Software. College level algebra, physics and familiarity with optics or equivalent experience.

NOTE: This course is an online course, utilizing Zoom Meeting for weekly live online synchronous meetings. Theses sessions make up the lab portion of the course, where you will be provided with optical design software license information. Students will need to have access to the internet, have speakers and a microphone. For those that live in different time zones please notify instructor on day one of any conflicts about being able to participate in the live meeting sessions.

Mary Turner received her Ph.D. in Optical Sciences from the University of Arizona, and is currently Director of Training at Breault Research Organization in Tucson, AZ. Dr. Turner has significant design experience in a wide variety of optical and illumination systems, including vision systems, telescopic systems, spectrometers and projection systems. She has spent much of her career teaching software based optical design and analysis courses to more than 5000 students worldwide.
