Course Description

This introductory course fills the gap between optical and mechanical engineering by training students to integrate the optical and mechanical component designs. Students will learn how to insure their designs can be reliably manufactured and that the built and assembled optical and mechanical components perform to the original designed and modeled system. Students learn to integrate and tolerance optical and mechanical components into subsystems by exporting the optical model into the mechanical design software and performing assembly design.

NOTE: This online course includes live webinar sessions using an online meeting software called ZOOM collaborative online learning tool for the lab portion of the course. For these sessions, students will need to have access to the internet, have speakers and a microphone or phone. The live sessions are one-hour synchronous discussions each week unless otherwise noted by your instructor. Each session will be recorded for those who cannot participate in the live sessions due to time conflicts. For those whose time zone may conflict with the scheduled webinar sessions please let the instructor know.

Venkata Suresh Narra, received his Master of Technology (M.Tech.) degree in Astronomical Instrumentation from the University of Calcutta. He has over 7 years of experience in Optical system design, optical instrumentation for space missions. He is involved in design, development and calibration of space astronomical instruments. He has conducted course on optical design using Zemax for Master's students and research scholars.
