Sleep and Health Across the Lifespan

Sleep is a fundamental pillar of health. Individuals that age well tend to sleep well, and disturbed sleep and is often concurrent with a variety of psychiatric and neurodevelopmental disorders, medical conditions, and health problems, including those that put individuals at risk for dementia such as diabetes and depression. Maintaining healthy sleep habits is critical for physical and mental health and wellbeing throughout life. This course will give a broad overview of sleep across the human lifespan, as well as a survey of evidence indicating sleep plays a critical role in maintaining both the health of the brain and the health of peripheral organs in the body. Participants will learn about their own sleep habits and how these habits align with the general recommendations from experts in sleep medicine. Instructor: Dr. Bryce Mander is an Assistant Professor at UC, Irvine in the Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior. He obtained his PhD in Neuroscience at Northwestern University and then completed his postdoctoral research fellowship in the Department of Psychology at UC Berkeley. His current research focus considers the role of sleep in cognitive aging.
