Optical Mechanical Component Design

Course Description

This introductory course fills the gap between optical and mechanical engineering by training students to integrate the optical and mechanical component designs. Students will learn how to insure their designs can be reliably manufactured and that the built and assembled optical and mechanical components perform to the original designed and modeled system. Students learn to integrate and tolerance optical and mechanical components into subsystems by exporting the optical model into the mechanical design software and performing assembly design.

Prerequisites: Successful completion of EECS_X493, or have prior experience or knowledge in Lens Design and Zemax Software. College level algebra, physics and familiarity with optics or equivalent experience. PLEASE NOTE: Students are required to bring a laptop to class and also have Solid Works, version 2010 or above (preferred) installed on their computers to be able to participate in class labs. Course is also available to take in a simulcast format using WebEx, where class meetings are held on the same days and times as the face to face class meetings. Student's taking the course in simulcast will need to have access to the internet, have speakers and a microphone; and have the Solid Works software as well. Students cannot miss more than three simulcast meetings otherwise a non passing grade will be granted. Charles Vice, is a Program Engineer at Abbott Medical Optics and has 30 years experience in opto-mechanical design in the commercial, military and medical device fields. His experience includes extensive use of CAD programs including SolidWorks (14 years) and AutoCAD 2D (10 years). He has 8 years experience as a technical instructor at Santa Ana College, teaching Drafting, Descriptive Geometry, Tool Design and AutoCAD.

SCOTT ROWE, P.E founded, and is currently Principal/Chief Consultant for Rowe Technical Design since March of 2005. Previously, he was Director of Engineering at WaveTec Vision Systems of Aliso Viejo, CA and Director of Optical Engineering for Fovioptics, Inc of Santa Clara CA. Earlier, he was also previously the Associate Director of Research and Development at Alcon Laboratories, Inc for 17 years. He has been involved in optical, optomechanical and laser system development for the past 33 years in a variety of settings, including military/aerospace, commercial and for the past 24 years in ophthalmic medical devices. His current professional interests include the design and construction of highly agile, precise diagnostic instruments for measuring macular pigments in the retina, non-invasively measuring blood glucose levels, and novel therapeutic lasers for treatment of retinal disorders, glaucoma and cataracts. He holds 15 US patents, and has published and lectured in a wide variety of technical and clinical venues. He is a Senior Member of SPIE, current President of OSSC and a member of ARVO, and is a registered Professional Engineer in the State of California.
