How Do Certificates Work?

Certificate programs offer a flexible, affordable way to build career-relevant skills without the time commitment of a traditional degree. Most require no formal application—learners simply browse programs, enroll in courses, and pay as they go. To earn a certificate, complete all required coursework with a grade of C or higher within five years. Specialized Studies programs follow the same structure but are shorter in scope, totaling less than 12 units.

Who Are These Programs For?

Whether you're a recent graduate, a mid-career professional, or looking to enter a new field, our programs give you the skills and credentials to get there.

Admission and Enrollment

DCE courses and programs are open enrollment. Learners may take individual courses or pursue a full certificate program.

Earn a Certificate

A Declaration of Candidacy is required to establish candidacy in a program. To learn about the benefits of earning a certificate and to declare candidacy, complete the application and pay the application and candidacy fee of $125 (non-refundable). Candidacy is not required to enroll into individual courses in a program.

Learners who complete all required courses for a program, meeting the program’s grading and time to completion requirements, are eligible to receive a certificate. Program requirements, including the number of courses and total units, vary by program and are outlined on individual program pages. All requirements must be completed within five (5) years after you enroll in your first course. To receive the Certified Digital Certificate after completing all the program requirements, you must submit the Request for Certificate to initiate the certificate audit process.
