UC Irvine Dean Gary W. Matkin Receives 2010 Excellence in Achievement Award

Cal Alumni Association Honors Matkin for Outstanding Professional and Personal Achievements

IRVINE, Calif. – January 25, 2010 – Gary W. Matkin, Ph.D., dean of continuing education at the University of California, Irvine, has been honored with the 2010 Excellence in Achievement Award from the Cal Alumni Association (CAA) at the University of California, Berkeley. The Excellence in Achievement Award is an annual award given to select UC Berkeley alumni for their outstanding career, community and life accomplishments. This year, Matkin was recognized along with four other distinguished alumni.

“It is an honor to be acknowledged by my alumnae and a privilege to be included in the company of such distinguished peers,” says Matkin. “Cal has been a constant part of my life since I entered the Haas School of Business in 1968. Another degree and 27 years with Berkeley Extension has anchored Cal in my soul even as I continue to serve UC at UC Irvine. Cal will always be associated with my colleagues and mentors that have been so important for my intellectual development; Earl Cheit, who guided me in both my degrees, and the late Charles Hitch (President Emeritus) and Professor Martin Trow. Their teachings and examples continue to inspire me."

Serving as dean of continuing education at UC Irvine since March 1, 2000, Matkin actively leads the operations of University Extension, Summer Session, and the UCI Distance Learning Center. In addition, Matkin oversees the University Extension’s English language and international programs—serving more than 3,000 students per year.

Matkin also initiated and guides the University’s OpenCourseWare (OCW) initiative. UC Irvine was the first University of California campus and first West Coast university to join the OpenCourseWare Consortium (OCWC). Under Matkin’s direction, the University has published more than 42 complete courses on its OCW Web site—allowing learners and educators throughout the world to access some of UC Irvine’s top-notch curriculum. Matkin currently serves as treasurer of the OCWC.

Prior to becoming UC Irvine’s dean of continuing education, Matkin was associate dean at UC Berkeley Extension, where he also was chief academic officer and responsible for the UC Berkeley Extension distance learning program, including its rapidly expanding online education initiative. He holds a doctorate in higher education and a master‘s degree in business administration from UC Berkeley. Matkin is a certified public accountant and author of Effective Budgeting in Continuing Education (1985), Technology Transfer and the University (1990), and Using Financial Information in Continuing Education: Accepted Methods and New Approaches (1997). He resides in Irvine, Calif., with his wife, Maya, and their son, Ethan.

About UC Irvine’s OpenCourseWare Initiative

The University of California, Irvine was the first University of California campus–and West Coast University–to join the OCW Consortium. UC Irvine's membership in the OCW Consortium is consistent with its public- and land-grant missions and its desire to play a significant role in contributing to the social welfare of the state, the nation and the world. Open educational resources (OER) showcase the University's high quality education and makes courses and course materials free for everyone in the world. UC Irvine's OCW is a large-scale, Web-based resource that houses educational assets that are discoverable, searchable, modifiable, and, best of all, free and easily available. Through the OCW movement, UC Irvine provides University-quality courses and learning assets to populations of self-learners that are underserved and in many cases, unable to participate in formal education at a university. This site also offers access to UC Irvine’s online continuing education offerings. For more information about UC Irvine's OCW initiative, visit http://open.uci.edu/, e-mail open@uci.edu or follow us at Twitter.com/UCI_OCW and Facebook (UC Irvine OpenCourseWare).
