Ace Your Next Interview.

by Kathy Seaton

When it comes to delivering a brilliant a job interview, there are certain things that you must do to stand out from other candidates. Remember, you are on an interview with everyone in the company, from the receptionist to the CEO. The impression you make is important from the beginning to the end of the interview process, job negotiation, and potential job offer.

Here are some tips to ensure that your process is seamless.

Do Your Research.

It is impressive when you walk into an interview knowing the ins and outs of the company. This type of detailed research proves that you are serious about the company and landing the job. Be sure to review the organization’s web site and social media sites. You want to understand the company’s goals and mission, its products or services, and its executive team. Also, review their press releases to find out what they are putting out into the marketplace, and what is new and exciting. And finally, research their industry so that you are familiar with the current trends and innovations.

Visit Glassdoor. Read the company’s Glassdoor profile to see if you can find sample interview questions that this employer has been known to ask job candidates.

Usually these types of questions may be posted on a company’s Glassdoor account. Evaluate your career accomplishments, the reason you are interviewing, and what you want to achieve in the future. Make sure that you can present your thoughts to the interviewer in no more than 30 minutes.

Ask Questions.

Prepare a detailed list of questions that you can pose to the interviewer. This will help the interview to be conversational. Keep in mind that an interview is a two-way street – you are looking at the company as a potential employer just as it is evaluating you as a candidate for the position.

Clean Up Your Social Media.

Many HR directors now turn to social media to learn about you. Ensure that you scrub your social profiles so that you can represent the best version of yourself, personally and professionally. Remember, your social media should almost appear as if it’s your resume.

Make an Impression.

As mentioned above, first impressions are everything. Do your best to create a connection with everyone that you meet. Remember, everyone is watching you to evaluate your behavior and potential to fit into the corporate culture.

Watch your Body Language.

Your body language speaks volumes about your interest in the position. Look the interviewer directly in the eye, smile, sit-up straight, and lean in to actively listen and respond.

Thank You and Follow Up.

Once the interview is over, make sure to thank everyone on your way out. Also, don’t forget to send a follow-up email to personally thank your interviewer. This will show that you are serious and eager to hear feedback about the position.

Follow these steps to increase your chance of being viewed as a potential candidate. Remember to take a deep breath, stay positive and engaged, and be authentic. After all, this is just as much an interview for you as it is for your potential future employer.

According to Ayn Rand, American writer and philosopher, “The question isn’t who’s going to let me; it’s who’s going to stop me.”
