Rules of Networking

If you've never attended a networking event, don’t despair! Odds are you will be nervous—that’s natural. You may be thinking that you are the only stranger in the room of well connected people, but that is only an illusion. Networking venues or events are the most natural place to meet new people; that’s why people are attending. Yes, many want to continue developing relationships with those met previously, but all are interested in connecting and developing new relationships.

Before you jump in and attend a networking group or event, keep these tips in mind:

  • Look the part for each event. Check out the dress code, is it casual or business dress?
  • Get your “stuff” together.  Where are your business cards? Can you lock up your purse or briefcase in the car?
  • Don’t go hungry if possible. You are there to meet people, not grab a meal.
